Track & Trace 2025; Part 1 / 3

In 2025 we are witnessing a significant shift in Track & Trace regulations, especially for companies in the pharmaceutical and FMCG sectors. Dennis Ottens, Program Manager at DJURA within BOIKON, notes that traceability is becoming ever more critical: every product, case and pallet will receive a unique code that must be traceable in real time via a central Track & Trace platform.

This sweeping change demands a complete overhaul of production-line processes and warehouse automation. “It is comparable to what we saw earlier in the tobacco industry,” Dennis explains. “Companies then had to adapt their packaging to new regulations.”

Implementing Stand-Alone Serialization Systems

With the move to item-level coding, it is no longer sufficient to place barcodes only on carton level. Manufacturers are now integrating stand-alone print-and-inspect stations that apply a 2D Data Matrix to every individual product, while smart serialization software registers the codes seamlessly and uploads them to the Track & Trace platform. A modular system is crucial: the stations can be inserted into existing lines with minimal downtime, but also serve as building blocks for entirely new production facilities.

Dennis advises beginning with a comprehensive assessment of current processes and systems. “Map out precisely what works and where the bottlenecks are. Then invest selectively in technological solutions such as real-time dashboards and robust serialization software.” He simultaneously underscores the importance of change management and targeted optimisation and implementation of production-automation systems. Thanks to the modular design of our machine platform, the solution can thereafter be smoothly integrated into both existing and completely new production lines.

As a result, compliance ceases to be a burden and becomes a strategic advantage. “Faster market access, more transparent processes and reduced risks,” Dennis concludes. “That makes your production line future-proof and competitive.”
